A SHOCKED York mother was given a rip-roaring birthday surprise today.
Sally Bourton, from Wetherby Road, Acomb, was presented with motorbike lessons as a 50th birthday treat from her husband, John. It is the couple's ambition to go riding across Europe on bikes when they retire.
John, a former Army major, arranged for Rachael Nicholas, of York Motorcycle Training, to turn up at their home and whisk Sally off.
When she arrived at the door, Sally thought she was the postman.
"I was in complete shock," Sally said. "I thought I might have been given gliding lessons, but I much prefer to be on a motorbike. I am looking forward to it, but I am very nervous."
Sally will be shown the basics on Rufforth Aerodrome before being allowed to ride across town later today.
John said: "It's always been one of our ambitions to ride across Europe together on our retirement. Sally used to have a moped when she was a teenager and has always wanted lessons. It was a great surprise.
"If she enjoys today, I will arrange for her to go on a week-long course."
Friends and neighbours gathered outside the house to watch Sally ride off on her adventure.
Cerydwen Evans said: "I think she will do really well. She's very adventurous and if she can put up with John for 28 years, she can do anything!"
