STUDENTS in York have been slugging it out in a competition to find the most popular piece of art in a city bar.
Artwork by students from York St John College has been display at the Slug And Lettuce bar for the last three months and was put to the public vote as part of the Bar Culture competition. TV news presenter, Harry Gration visited the pub to cast the final vote and announce the winner of the contest.
Winner Ashley Kay, who won the first prize of £500 for the piece, Postcards to York holiday destinations, and will go through to the national final, was unable to attend the ceremony.
But Rachel Stainsby, whose piece of fine art was the second most popular with the pub's customers, was there to scoop her prize money of £250. Katie Street came third and received £100.
The project, backed by Kim Howells, Minister for Tourism, Film and Broadcasting, was created last year by York St John College and was so popular the competition has gone nationwide. It is designed to give students experience of exhibiting their work and bring art into places not usually associated with art.
