I NOTICE that P Wallis has had the temerity to criticise the tide of filth emanating from York Theatre Royal's production of Trainspotting (Letters, May 30). Indeed he was so appalled he felt defiled and wished to cleanse himself in the air outside.
Shame on you Mr Wallis for being so sensitive and moreover unaware of the background of this obnoxious play; and what were you thinking about in the expectation of being entertained in York's premier playhouse?
Don't you know that this kind of production is what the tourists and residents of York crave for?
But Bernadette Fletcher (June 2) and R D Watson (June 3) have come to your rescue. They are up to speed in this enlightened world in praising the dramatisation of the sub culture with the abundance of obscenity and foul language. This is real life, Mr Wallis.
It takes intellect and skill as a playwright to string together hard- hitting dialogue with repeatedly endless profanities to match the hideous plot.
R D Watson, in particular, has been inspirational in his suggestion that Trainspotting should now form part of the Sixth Form school curriculum. What insight.
Families I know will be thrilled beyond measure for their offspring to have a blow-by-blow account of the sexual deprivation content of Trainspotting.
The question is, have we a sewer large enough in York to take the demand for seats from the local education authority?
D Taylor,
The Close, Clifton, York.
