A YORK group that puts university students into classrooms received an award from the Queen as she celebrated the 50th anniversary of her coronation.

The York Student In Schools group was one of 16 schemes across Yorkshire to be given a new Queen's Golden Jubilee award for outstanding commitment and contribution to the local community. The group introduces students from the University of York to classrooms where they can provide support to teachers and help children, as well as get vital work experience.

Other winners included The Junction in Harrogate, which provides support, education and advice to a group of people with a wide range of special needs.

Nationally 200 voluntary and community groups were winners. They ranged from groups offering educational programmes to ethnic minorities to one that has created a sensory garden for the elderly and disabled.
