PUB landlords and proprietors of hotels and B&Bs in North Yorkshire are being warned about a plausible trickster, known as the "Bogus Barman".
The county's police say the "ginger-haired, bad-toothed thief" talks his way into a barman's job, then vanishes with the takings. He also makes off without paying for his keep at local B&Bs and hotels.
They say he is still active and is wanted by 14 police forces.
The "Bogus Barman" has used different names, including Simon Lee, Coulson, and Simon Wilkinson.
He is about 5ft 10in, in his late 20s, and of medium build. He has short, very curly light ginger hair, wears glasses and has distinctive teeth - one of the upper ones is black and decayed.
He speaks with a Wiltshire accent, and is quiet and has a mild manner.
He dresses smartly and does not appear to smoke or drink. He has spoken of having a wife and child in the West Country.
Police officers say the man is plausible, and has little difficulty in persuading landlords to take him on. He quickly emerges as a poor barman, lacking confidence and experience. He is quick, though, to find out where the takings are kept.
Detective Constable Alan Hope, of Northallerton CID, said: "Anyone approached by this man for a job or for accommodation should call the police immediately. He is travelling the country cheating people out of their earnings, and he needs to be stopped."
Anyone who can help should phone Northallerton CID on 01609 783131.
