THESE are the breathtaking views of York that residents and visitors to the city have the opportunity to see - if they are brave enough to ride what's billed as Europe's biggest mobile Ferris wheel.

York Minster can clearly be seen from the top of the 45ft wheel, currently put up on Knavesmire as part of the Thunder Theme Park, along with other York landmarks such as the Terry's chocolate factory and clock tower.

York Racecourse, with its new Ebor stand, is clearly visible and Poppleton Road water tower is also prominent on the skyline.

In among the landmarks are the terraced houses of South Bank, the streets, parks and allotments of the city - all seen from a new and temporary viewpoint.

The wheel will remain in place after the theme park closes on Sunday, June 8, and it will be there for the next meeting at York Racecourse.

Liz Topi, City of York Council's events officer, said it was another first for York.

She said: "It's just an extra novelty for people. Normally we clear the ground completely for a race meeting but I approached the racecourse and they had no objections.

"The racing brings in a lot of visitors to the city and this will provide another view of York - it's a view you will not get anywhere else."
