Europe's biggest mobile Ferris wheel opens for the first time on UK soil today, offering fairgoers an incredible view of York's skyline.
The 45 metre-high attraction is the highlight of the Thunder Theme Park which will be based on Knavesmire for the next 11 days. Thrill-seekers can also enjoy a reverse bungee which catapults people into the air and the Big Buzz which throws passengers in all directions on the end of a swinging mechanical arm.
More sedate traditional rides such as dodgem cars and a carousel will also be on offer, as well as a children's play area, refreshments and exhibition stalls.
Liz Topi, City of York Council events officer, said more than 20,000 people were expected to attend the fair.
