ARCHAEOLOGISTS have discovered a Roman military camp at Monks Cross, York.

The camp was uncovered by staff from the York Archaeological Trust (YAT), who were excavating land near Kathryn Avenue before work begins to build new Park & Ride facilities.

It was spotted after aerial photographs, taken by national conservation group English Heritage, spotted soil marks in the earth.

Excavations carried out at the site so far have uncovered a large ditch, some pits and a "small number" of pieces of pottery, evidence that is said to show the site was used as a camp.

YAT excavation director Mark Johnson, pictured above, said: "This is definitely a Roman military camp, but we are not sure if this is one used for a very short time during a military campaign, or if it is a practice camp, something built by Roman soldiers based in York as a training exercise."

The site is being opened up to members of the public on Friday, when visitors can watch archaeologists and staff at work.

Mr Johnson said: "This is a great opportunity for the general public to learn about Roman history. "

The camp will be open between 11am and 3pm on Friday. Classes of schoolchildren are welcome and encouraged to visit, teachers should ring Mr Johnson on 07771 996820 to arrange a time.
