A NEW project has been started in York to give youngsters the chance to take part in fun projects within the city's green spaces.
Called Running Wild, the scheme has been launched by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and is supported by York Children's Fund.
The project will set up Running Wild groups for young people, based around a green space which is within walking distance of their home or school.
Rachael McClelland, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Running Wild project officer, said: "I'm delighted to be starting this great new project for young people in the city. Running Wild groups will give children aged eight to 13 the chance to discover and explore the natural world through lots of different activities. They will be mainly outdoor sessions, so that young people can channel their energies into constructive projects - they'll also be great fun.
"One of the best parts of the project it that local children will be really involved. After all, these are their neighbourhood sites. Children will be consulting others about what to do, helping make decisions and carrying out practical work.
"This could be planting hedges, digging ponds, designing a playground or growing fruit. I'll also be organising trips to local nature reserves.
"I'm looking forward to pond-dipping, mini-beast safaris, seed-gathering and nest box building, to art and craft projects, using natural materials - perhaps even performing arts.
"I'm going to need lots of help, so I'm hoping to find some adults to give me a hand."
Running Wild has already picked out a few potential sites, like Clifton Backies, St Nicholas Field and Acomb Wood.
The groups will meet regularly out of school hours - at lunchtime, after school, at weekends and during holidays. A full programme of activities will be led by Rachael, but volunteers, parents and teachers will be involved too.
Pictures Of Acomb Wood will be a taster event to introduce people to Running Wild. Meet at Girvan Close Play Area, Acomb Wood, tomorrow. Young people and parents/guardians can call in between 11am and 2pm.
Any young people wanting more details about Running Wild, or adults wishing to help, can call 01904 659570 or 07798 641868.
