THE Poet Laureate is to officially open a York village library and meet local schoolchildren this week.
Andrew Motion is visiting Strensall Library on Thursday for the official opening of the new and improved library, which has been the subject of a £130,000 modernisation and expansion project.
While there he will also meet pupils from Robert Wilkinson Primary School in the village, who have been illustrating some of their favourite poems to celebrate his visit.
As well as discussing the children's work, he will speak about the importance of libraries and books in the local community.
The opening on Thursday afternoon is by invitation only, but on Friday there will be a family fun day which will be open to the public.
The fun day, from 2pm to 7.30pm, will include story-telling, games and puzzles in the afternoon, and IT help for adults, from 5pm to 7pm. For information, phone the library on 01904 490876.
The Poet Laureate will complete his visit to York on Thursday with two readings at the Friargate Theatre, at 6.30pm, and 8.45 pm. Tickets are available from the theatre on 0845 961 3000.
