THERE was a humdinger of a finish to the Edward Readman Trophy first round game at Bolton Percy, which left the home side victors and Stillington rueing their mistakes as they each failed to grab the chance to earn the honours.
A whirlwind innings by Dave Herbert, who hit six sixes and four fours in his 57, backed by Shaminda Dissanayake's 54 enabled Stillington to make 188 although they failed to utilise all their overs as Pip Malloch (3-25), Peter Houseman (3-51) and Dave Randall (3-30) had them all out inside 36 overs.
Houseman then made 45 while Nick Lister added 30 and Abdul Rigby played a skipper's knock of 57.
Bolton entered the final over requiring seven runs to win which soon became three off the final ball. A scrambled single was achieved due to the wicketkeeper breaking the wicket
without the ball and the two batsmen set off for an equalising run which should have been
fruitless.
A Stillington fielder then had the presence of mind to pull out the stump which was held aloft, however he had used one hand to extract the stump while holding the ball in his other hand which negated the dismissal and allowed Bolton to tie the scores, who progress to round two by virtue of having lost fewer wickets.
Crayke's Paul Hutchinson shredded the Rowntrees attack as he rattled an unbeaten 157 which took his to the day's top score of 277-2.
Andrew Dawson (31), Jonathan Wright (24) and Eric Watson (34no) played cameo roles alongside Hutchinson.
Sean Marshall made 42 for 'Trees while Mick Jones added 25 but Dave Allitt (3-31) and Norman Pipes (4-25) dismissed the innings for 110.
Holders Malton & Old Malton had an easy win over Selby for whom Peter Hoyle made 59 out of a second innings total of 155-7.
Earlier Neil Johnson made 67, David Nankervis 40 and Steve Baxter 30 as Malton set a target of 198-9. Chris Dye had 3-20 for Selby.
Stamford Bridge cast aside their abysmal league form to topple 2002 runners-up Hornsea.
Aussie Stuart Boyle cracked 88 while Matt Beckett made 57 as Stamford blossomed to 222-3.
Dan Dales then made 61 for the Hollismen but Shaun Veysey (3-23) Stuart Boyle (3-28) and Mark Fairweather (3-40) had them all out for 195.
The game at Cawood was over in quick time when the home side crashed to 37 all out, with the damage was done by Whitkirk's Harlon Haye (7-15).
Whitkirk then went on to record the first ten-wicket triumph in the trophy's five-year history.
Len Watson was Huntington's top scorer with 22 as his ten-man side struggled to 107 all out against Huby, for who Paul Moore took 3-12 and Hugh Sheddon 3-17.
Huby opener Darren Howell then made 47 not out and Mike Mierzwinski 34 as Huby cantered to an eight-wicket victory.
An all-third division clash at Hemingbrough saw the league's newcomers gain a 28-run advantage over Bubwith.
Maqsood Akbar made 52 before Charlie Cameron (3-19) and Paul Van Dyke (3-17) swept aside the remainder of the home side as they were dismissed for 129.
But Stuart Cox claimed 4-15 to help dismiss Bubwith for 101 with the only ray of hope coming from Chris MacLaren's 44.
Fourth division Sheriff Hutton produced the biggest shock of the day when they had a comfortable five-wicket victory over second division outfit Castleford.
Aussie John Blanck top scored for the West Riding side with 34 as Richard Armitage's 3-17 had them all out for 125.
Armitage then followed with 28 as, with Eddie Hull making 42 and Alan Franks 26, Sheriff earned a trip to Whitkirk with five wickets in hand.
Thorp Arch's hopes of repeating last year's giant-killing act were scuppered by Chris Scratchard whose figures of 5-9 put Studley Royal into the next round.
Arch tumbled to 63 all out and although the in-form Chris Cole hit back with 3-31, an unbeaten 37 from Phil Orton took his side to a seven-wicket win.
Londesbrough Park went down to a five-wicket home defeat at the hands of Dringhouses.
John Williamson made 49 for Park but Scott Jacques (3-13) held them to 120-8.
Dringhouses then clinched a second round berth through Kev McGuinness (41), John Crowe (26) and Mick Kenyon (25).
Yapham failed to match Scarborough's 174-9 to lose by 43 runs.
Karl Theobold led the way for the Seasiders with 37 while runs also came from Adam Lyth (32) and David Morrs (26). Tom Pateman then took 3-22 as Yapham were dismissed for 131
Duncombe Park's Mark Wilkie hit the three-figure mark as the Helmsley-based side beat Sewerby.
Wilkie enjoyed the cliff-top setting to reach 107 and, with Brian Leckenby making 44, Park reached 253-7 despite the bowling of Tahir Maqsood (3-47) and Robin Coates (3-43).
Sewerby made a good fist of their reply through Maqsood (64) and Mike Artley (55no) but they were unable to mount a serious challenge and closed on 205-7.
Phil Stothard hit 81 when Wilberfoss took first use of the wicket against Goole.
Richard Mann continued his good early season form with 4-17 as a home total of 156-8 emerged.
Anthony Gibbins then flew the flag for Goole with 94 before Steve Foster took the visitors to an eight-wicket win with an unbeaten 44.
