Hovingham slipped from top to second place in division three of York and District Senior League when they had to hang on at 115-9 against Woodhouse Grange.
Russ Bilton's 35 was top score in Grange's 151-9 as Simon Gill, who captained the triumphant Woodhouse Grange side at Lord's a few years ago and has come out of retirement to help Hovingham, took 3-32.
When Hovingham replied, John Mosey made 39 to hold up the Grange attack led by Dudley Cooper (3-27) and his side were just able to ward off defeat.
Overseas player Ryan Elliott produced a match-winning six for 40 to help Heslington take over at the top of the division by beating New Earswick by 32 runs.
Mark Fratson had made 42 and Robin Cockerill 29 in Heslington's score of 147-9, with Paul Stimpson taking 5-64.
Elliott then got his six-wicket haul and Earswick were knocked over for 115 despite a round half-century by John Hetherton.
Chris MacLaren made 49 at the top of the Bubwith order batting first at Bolton Percy and reached 88-2. A dramatic collapse, engineered by Alistair Rigby, who took 4-20 in ten overs, saw Bubwith slide to 98-7.
Brian Last then profited from an early dropped catch to make an unbeaten 30 which lifted the visitors' score to 164-9. Last then took 3-26 as Bolton Percy hung on at 93-9.
Civil Service won a thrilling match against Clifton Alliance by two runs at Boroughbridge Road.
Service made only 92 as John Bladen took 4-14 and 16-year-old Alex Renton 3-20. Clifton Alliance were then dismissed for 90 by Paul Wynn (4-20) and Mick Bradley (4-26).
