AN APPEAL is to be launched to create a unique and lasting tribute to York-educated Hull FC player and Britain's only rugby league Victoria Cross holder, Jack Harrison.
Plans are in place for a memorial plinth at the entrance of the new KC Stadium to commemorate the life and courage of Harrison, who was killed in 1917 in the First World War.
Harrison was born in 1891 in Southcoates Lane, Hull. He attended Lime Street School and trained as a schoolteacher in York where he was invited to play for York Northern Union Football Club.
He played for Hull FC from 1912-16 and holds the record as leading try scorer for 52 in one season. He later enlisted into the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and won his VC in action.
