SHOPKEEPERS in York today said turnout for late-night shopping was improving - and called for the scheme to be given more time.
City centre shops now stay open until 8pm every Thursday, though low turnouts had led some York residents to brand the event a flop.
But last night's late opening saw increased numbers in town, despite the rain.
Susan Allick, store manager at BhS, in Coney Street, said late-night opening was "building week on week".
She said: "It has been called a flop, but we think it is an excellent idea for the city and we are totally committed, but it will take time to build.
"Since we started it has been building each week. We can see the benefit and, as people become accustomed to it, we will see more benefit, especially when we get into Christmas trading."
Derek Gedman, store manager at Littlewoods, said he had been "pleasantly surprised" by last night's shopping.
Crowds were up on previous events with a number of young people among the shoppers, he said.
Mr Gedman said: "After 7pm we were dwindling but before that there had been a noticeable uplift, and that was with the weather being as bad as it was.
"It was an encouraging night and people have to remember it is early days yet. The decisions we make here are going to have to be for the long term.
"Last night was pleasing, let's wait and see if it is a trend that develops."
