THE jury in the case of the roofer accused of cheating an Acomb pensioner out of more than £20,000 today retired to consider its verdict.
The prosecution at York Crown Court allege that Anthony Robert Turner, 34, worked with another man to persuade Thomas Medd, 76, to hand over cheques and cash for work worth at most £5,000 to his driveway. The payments totalled more than £20,000.
Turner, of Carrick Street, Hartlepool, denies four charges of deception and one of attempted deception.
He alleges he was only the chauffeur and right-hand man of the landscape gardener in charge of the work and only carried out his orders. He denies any dishonesty.
