HOLGATE, champions of the Persimmon Homes Ideal Standard York Bowls League, have stumbled in their attempt to win the title for the fourth successive year.
They lost 7-1 to major rivals Haxby Road, who are now the only undefeated team.
The match was played on Haxby Road's green in atrocious weather and the result could have been a clean sweep for the home team but for Phil Emmerson's last wood which removed Dave Stroughair's winner and secured a point.
RI Corinthians, who only just missed promotion from Division Two last year, are undefeated after four games.
Stamford Bridge, hoping for an immediate return to Division One, suffered a setback by losing 7-1 at Clifton.
Selby, who joined the league this year, lost 6-2 at Scarcroft and it is too early to say if they will follow other new entrants like Shipton in making instant progress to higher divisions.
Secretaries are reminded that entry forms for Persimmon Homes Ideal Standard individual competitions include the Bert Keech Two Wood to be played on Sunday, June 1. Both close on Tuesday, May 27.
