FEW people in Kirkbymoorside know the name of Mrs Rose Magson, despite her being one of the best-known personalities in the market town.
Even her neighbours are baffled when you ask for her - because everyone knows her merely as "Auntie Rosie".
Mrs Magson - 90 in November - has joined the elite group of people to be honoured by the town council through its eminent citizen award.
Her work for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Day appeal spans nearly 40 years, during which she has raised thousands of pounds, and she has five long service awards as a National Savings collector.
She is held in high affection in Kirkbymoorside because of her unstinting work for the community, going from house-to house collecting for Cancer Research and also for the Soldiers' and Sailors' Children appeal.
Despite her age, Mrs Magson, of Shaw Drive, Kirkbymoorside, has a reputation for her baking - chocolate cakes being her speciality!
The Mayor of Kirkbymoorside, Coun John Bowes, who presented the framed award, said: "Rosie has done a terrific amount of work for the community, in a quiet and jolly way over many years, not seeking any reward, but caring and helping others."
Coun Bowes paid tribute to her work for the annual Poppy Day appeal in Kirkbymoorside. "The council and its residents are very grateful for all she has done. Rosie's a truly wonderful lady," he said.
