AN historic York show has been saved from cancellation after new volunteers stepped forward to help with organisation.

Fulford Show was set to be cancelled after three committee members resigned last year, but new volunteers have stepped in and plans are back on track.

Peter Barton, the chairman of the show committee, said: "It is important in that it is a tradition. People do enjoy it and they want to see the tradition going on."

The show, which is thought to be more than 100 years old, will be held on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Despite cancellations over the years it has enjoyed a long history and is a popular event.

Last year's show was very successful and, in 2001 organisers managed to hold an event despite many other shows being cancelled because of foot and mouth.

Helen Adcock, show secretary, said this year's event would be an all-round village show and a good family afternoon out.

There will be plenty of activities for children including a bouncy castle, adventure area, children's races and colouring competition.

Organisers also hope to get a children's entertainer as well as a face painter.

For the adults there will be exhibits on wine making, a flower and vegetables show, beer tent, hot food and tombola.

Anybody who is interested in the show should phone Helen Adcock on 01904 633578.
