BURNHOLME Community College, in York, has become one of 500 schools in the country to achieve the Sportsmark Status.
The national accreditation from Sport England was given to the school following a rigorous application process.
Sport England set targets for the school to achieve including a well-balanced physical education programme, a wide range of out-of-school-hours activities and significant sporting links with the local community. Much of the credit for the achievement has been given to the school's new Australian PE teacher, Liz Eisma.
Liz carried out a major review of PE and sporting provision at the school, and will be reintroducing GCSE PE from September as part of the drive towards Sportsmark Gold.
The news was also welcomed by the head of PE, Dennis Barden, who will retire this year after 37 years' service.
A school representative said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the achievement of this award possible.
"This award is yet more good news for Burnholme."
The school's head of performing arts, Tina Wright, was recently shortlisted for a national teaching award.
It is presently on a massive fundraising drive as part of its bid to become a specialist business college.
