HOWZAT! - world-famous former Test cricket umpire Dickie Bird took a trip to York Racecourse and gave the course's new Ebor stand his legendary salute.
Staunch Yorkshireman Dickie said: "I enjoy coming to York because it is very, very special. The people, the hospitality, the service - it really is the best in the country."
Thousands of other racegoers packed on to the city's Knavesmire yesterday to enjoy some top-class racing at the stand's first meeting.
A total of 10,345 people attended yesterday's meeting, ten per cent up on last year.
"We are delighted," said course spokesman James Brennan.
