THOUSANDS of racegoers have declared York Racecourse's gleaming new £20 million Ebor stand a fine thoroughbred.

The showcase stand at the city's racecourse was officially opened by Lord Halifax, chairman of York Race Committee, prompting cheers from watching punters as he cut the tape.

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: "After seeing the stand taking shape for 18 months, it's wonderful to see it open and being used and appreciated by racegoers.

"With its clear views of the track and easy access to food, drink and toilets, we're sure County Stand racegoers and annual members will feel their experience of watching the outstanding horses we attract is being enhanced by this splendid new facility."

Students Kayla Boryslawskyj and Jenny Lloyd, both 23 and from Woodthorpe, York, also gave the stand the thumbs-up. Kayla said: "It is very good. You can stay inside and still see the racing even if it is a bit cold, like today."

Racegoer Alan Quenby, who travels to every York meeting from his Doncaster home, said the new stand's facilities matched those at the prestigious racecourse in Cheltenham. He said: "I'm a member at Cheltenham and the atmosphere there is excellent, but I have to say that for facilities and view this new stand is up there with the best."

Taking the lead in the fashion stakes with a striking red outfit, and refusing to be downhearted by occasional showers, was Janet Topple, an ex-pupil of the former Queen Anne Grammar School, in York, who lives in Canterbury.

She said: "I love returning to York. My husband, Reg, and I are here for the full three days, and are going to enjoy every second."

Former Sheriff of York, Martin Brumby, enjoyed yesterday's race meeting."I am very impressed with the stand. I am proud to have chaired the planning committee that approved it," he said.

TV racing pundit John McCririck was broadcasting from in front of the Ebor stand. He said: "What a fantastic erection, and delivered on time and on budget. You can't say fairer than that."

Course spokesman James Brennan hailed the day a success.

He said: "It has been an exciting day for us. We're seeing the new stand open and so far have had only positive comments about it.

"No doubt there will be bits we can learn from today for the rest of the season and will take stock at the end of the day. For now, though, everyone is enjoying their racing."
