Five star: HEWORTH Golf Club celebrated a high-five in the York Union of Golf Clubs' Lewis trophy.
The club won the event for the fifth straight year thanks to Dene Wharton (14 handicap) and Jim Batt (3). They prevailed at Aldwark Manor with 44 stableford points to edge out York GC's David Beck (10) and Andy King (13) on 43, with the Easingwold GC pairing of Malcolm Pringle (12) and Jonathan Marwood (9) a further point behind.
Heat beat
COPPING a possible trail to the sun of Portugal is Pike Hills golfer Philip Metcalfe. The York-based police officer posted a nett score of 64 to win his club's qualifier in the Lombard Trophy, Europe's biggest pro-am competition. The 45-year-old Metcalfe will now partner Pike Hills GC professional Ian Tailby at Sand Moor on May 21 in the regional final from which the winners go into the grand final at the San Lorenzo course in Portugal from September 5-9.
Mix it up
COUNT-BACK settled the tight finish to Allerthorpe Park's mixed spring trophy with Alan Walsh, Patrick Lucid and Viv Tattersall pipping Peter Wright, Steven Roberts and Margaret Senior after both scored 84 points. Meanwhile, David Williams won division one of the April medal with a nett 59, one above Simon Thompson. John Elsworth's 58 sealed the division two prize.
Coach roots
COACHING sessions for boys and girls from eight years old and above will be held at York GC starting next Tuesday from 5pm-6pm and running for the next five weeks. The cost for the five sessions is £10 and no experience is needed. To book contact professional Andrew Hoyles tel York 490304.
Go, Carol
Carol Richardson, 29 handicap, won the first qualifying round of Fulford's annual Rose Bowl competition with a one-under 73, two ahead of Elizabeth Burns. Both qualified for the final stages alongside Kaye Bradley and Pam Clancey.
Hessled out
Fulford lost 3-1 to Hessle in the Mail on Sunday Classic. Will Holmes (5 handicap) was Fulford's sole winner, beating Trevor Hewson (8) four and two.
