Soviet Song, bred and reared in Ryedale, can hit a high note in tomorrow's Sagitta 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Unbeaten in three races last season, including the Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Ascot, where she was particularly impressive, Soviet Song is trained at Newarket by James Fanshawe for the Elite Racing Club, which has hundreds of members.

Former Norton trainer Maurice Camacho oversees the breeding side of the Elite organization and Soviet Song is not only the product of one of his matings, but she spent her early life at Camacho's Star Cottage stables.

A class-act, the three-year-old has not been seen in action this season, Fanshawe having elected to forego running her in one of the traditional Classic trials.

But work-watchers at Newmarket report Soviet Song to be in rude health after a series of solid displays on the gallops.

With Sir Michael Stoute's Russian Rhythm, winner of the Lowther Stakes on Knavesmire last August, apparently slow to come to hand this spring, there appears to be little confidence about the chances of Kieren Fallon's mount obliging. That said, she is too good a filly to dismiss from calculations altogether.

Bigger dangers to Soviet Song, however, may come from across the water in the shape of Six Perfections, the ante-post favourite, and Intercontinental, who are both trained in France.

But my idea is that this Classic will remain with the home-team, courtesy of Soviet Song, who is fancied to extend her unbeaten record.
