IN the Fibbers show of the week, the James Taylor Quartet return to the York live music bar on Bank Holiday Monday.
"Ten years before anyone imagined what Propellerheads or Jamiroquai might sound like, JTQ were producing sleazy cop-show tunes with a smart mixture of Doors B3 Hammond organ, some big old trumpets and a sizeable smirk," says Fibbers manager Tim Hornsby. "You don't even need to close your eyes to imagine the smell of burning rubber, the wail of sirens and the screech of getaway cars."
Taylor's soul-jazz and stinging instrumental, brassy funk style started with Mod-revival band The Prisoners and continues in JTQ, his jazz-friendly Mod squad whose music coined the term "acid jazz".
Among their high-profile engagements have been a collaboration with Tom Jones on Looking Out My Window and contributions to the Austin Powers movie soundtracks.
Tickets for this York Live Music Festival event cost £12.50 in advance on 01904 651250 or £14 on the door.
- The Fibbers/Evening Press Battle of the Bands 2003 enters Round Two on Wednesday, when former finalists Duck Sick come up against Meyssan and Solstice from 8pm. Admission is £3.
