CENTENARY celebrations for a York school have been launched, with balloons being released in the city centre.
Children from the Minster School released about 180 balloons to celebrate the anniversary of the re-founding of the school in 1903.
The school's origins reach back to 627 AD.
Headmaster Dr Richard Shephard said: "The balloon release was a very enjoyable event. Enough balloons went at the time to ensure a good launch, and by the end of the afternoon they had all gone, so we were pleased by that.
"It was a good focus for the children, who thought it was all good fun."
The balloons all carried labels with the children's names, with the owner of the balloon reported to have travelled the farthest in line for a prize.
