THE Junior Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament for the Peter Terry Trophy is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Several well-known names from the York tennis scene are engraved on the trophy and the organisers are hoping to attract a record entry in its milestone year.
The competition will be held on June 8 at Rowntree Park, starting at 9.15am and is open to players aged under 16 on January 1 this year.
The competition was set up in 1963 when Peter Terry was president of the York and District Mixed Tennis League.
Although he retired as president some years ago he still takes an interest in the tournament and attends whenever possible to present the trophies.
Entrants must be members of a club in the York and Mixed Tennis League and/or attend a school within six miles of the Post Office, Lendal, York.
Entry is £3 and if players are unable to find a partner the organisers will try to find one for them.
Entry forms have been sent to local clubs and should be returned to the entry secretary, Philip Langley, 13 Wold Street, Norton, Malton, Y017 9AA (tel 0778 0673882) no later than Friday, May 30.
The competition is supported by City of York Council leisure services and IT Sports.
