TWO North Yorkshire police officers climbed aboard a steam engine today to launch an extraordinary challenge.
Sergeant Paul Stephenson, based at North Yorkshire Police headquarters at Newby Wiske, pictured right, and Community PC Ray Thwaites, from Helmsley, left, are training for the New York Marathon in November.
To raise money for their chosen charity, Weston Spirit, the officers are auctioning off ten rides on the footplate of a historic steam engine. The trips were generously donated by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The two policemen need to raise £2,200 each, which will go entirely to the charity. Weston Spirit was set up by Falklands veteran Simon Weston to help socially excluded and disadvantaged children.
The steam engine rides can be won either by donation, or by making a bid. To give money, email NYPDMarathon@aol.com or write to Sgt Paul Stephenson c/o Driver Training Dept, North Yorkshire Police HQ, Newby Wiske, Northallerton, DL7 9HA.
