A 59-year-old man was appearing before York magistrates today charged with the murder of retired racecourse worker William Smith. Mr Smith, aged 62, of Cemetery Road, York, died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering serious head injuries in an incident outside Yates's Wine Lodge, Low Ousegate, York, on Good Friday.
