A GREEN-FINGERED York couple whose love blossomed following a chance meeting at a fair, are celebrating 50 years of marriage today.
Derek Rowe, 76, from Shipton Road, was on his way to a whist drive when he spotted his future wife, Joan, standing beside a fairground ride. Plucking up the courage to talk to her, he arranged to take her cycling in the countryside the following day.
"We've never been apart since," Derek said.
"If I had not seen her that day we would probably have never got together."
Derek, who moved to York from Norfolk, was manager at Currys Parliament Street branch for many years.
The couple, who are celebrating the occasion with a family meal, have four children, David, Stephen, Carol and Linda.
"We've always shared a love of gardening and have the same sense of humour," Derek said.
