IN the first concert of the month-long York Live Music Festival, John Spiers and Jon Boden, pictured, perform at the Black Swan Folk Club, Peasholme Green, York, on May Day.
Spiers plays melodeon and sings, Boden plays fiddle and sings, and together they bring an original slant to the best of the English folk tradition in a partnership forged in the Oxford folk session scene.
Boden was talent-spotted by folk luminary Martin Carthy. "I saw this lad called Jon Boden playing at the Lewes folk club down in Sussex and was completely blown away by him. This lad was wonderful," he said.
Since then, in February, Boden and Spiers have won the 2003 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, the prestigious gong for the new folk act of the year.
Next Thursday, expect to hear raucous Morris tunes, inventive and enigmatic arrangements of country dance tunes, punky upbeat rabble-rousing songs and intense ballads.
Doors open at 8pm and admission is £5, concessions £4.
