An exciting game graced the 'Any Triples' knockout final at New Earswick, where Dave Kermode, Chris and Mal Beavers came from 12-4 down after ten ends to lead 14-13 going into the last end. Though Brian Gray, Roy Robinson and Dave Birch levelled, Beavers' team got the all-important shot to take the title 15-14.
It was a good week for Kermode who gained a two-shot advantage over Dave Birch, who started on -2 in the handicap singles.
Birch reduced the arrears by getting a single on the first end but then dropped six shots over the next three. After 13 ends he trailed 12-5 but took the lead. Then, with the scores at 20-19 in favour of Birch, Kermode moved in with two singles to claim the title as 21-20 victor.
In the ladies' fours, Audrey Thompson, Kath Sykes, Jean Bartnett and Pat Storey led Maureen Wood, Moyra Headley, Lyz Jerrum and Kath Hardcastle 13-12 after 16 ends before Thompson's side scored a six, followed by a four, two and a single to put the game beyond reach.
The other knockout finals were one-sided.
Ralph Tiplady and Betty Ketley scored a six on the third on their way to an easy 29-13 mixed pairs title, while Maureen Wood, Moyra Headley and Lyz Jerrum claimed the ladies' triples crown with a convincing 22-6 victory against Pat Foster, Barbara Maidment and Shirley Hardcastle.
