THE Archbishop of York Dr David Hope goes to Romania next year in what will be probably his final pilgrimage as the Church of England's second most senior prelate.
He will lead a party of between 60 and 80 pilgrims on a ten-day visit, which will take in some of the country's most splendid Eastern Orthodox churches and monasteries.
Romania has held a special place in Dr Hope's heart ever since he spent 18 months in the country as a young priest more than 30 years ago.
In an exclusive interview with the Evening Press he said: "I have a great fondness for the country. It has a hugely attractive landscape and a hugely attractive people - fun, warm and welcoming - and it has had a great impact on my life. I would love to introduce it to other people."
The pilgrimage, costing participants £869 each, will begin in the capital, Bucharest, on March 11. Pilgrims will then be driven by coach to the historic Saxon city of Brasov in Transylvania.
From there they will move on to the medieval hilltop fortress of Sighisoara, before travelling on to Cluj.
