LATE-NIGHT shopping in York could be extended to six evenings a week - if it proves a success on Thursdays.
More than 30 city-centre stores stayed open until 8pm last Thursday for the first time outside the Christmas season.
Some retailers reported a disappointingly quiet evening's business, but said they expected turnout to improve as the public became more aware of the late opening.
Len Cruddas, chief executive of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "Although it was a bit quiet, generally we are considering it a success. It will take time to build up. We are hoping it will do well."
He said that if late opening did do well enough on Thursdays, the chamber would like to see it run from Monday to Saturday.
"Visitors just cannot understand why we don't open late already, as it happens everywhere else on the Continent."
