VETERAN forest man George Hodgson is hanging up his axe after four decades of work.
The 65-year-old, who was born in Thornton-le-Dale, has lived in Dalby Forest since he started work for the Forestry Commission in 1963.
Sawdust must run through his veins, because almost all of his family have worked for the organisation at one time or another.
George, who has helped harvest four million tonnes of timber in the North York Moors, said he had watched the industry transform from back-breaking manual work to hi-tech mechanisation.
"Back in the old days we didn't have harvesting machines, but relied on chainsaws and agricultural vehicles," said George.
"There were also a lot more horses working the woods.
"Today's machines are computer-controlled and make light work of the job."
"I wasn't built for indoor work and have really enjoyed my job.
"Living in the forest means I'll be able to keep an interest in the industry and see how Dalby develops in the future."
