NOT content to rest on rock laurels and his Husker Du and Sugar accomplishments, Bob Mould is again asking his audience to travel with him along the sonic highway.
Long Playing Grooves, his first full-length dance release, is taken from 1999-2001 material. Highlights include the scorching opener, Theme (It's A Perfect Day), a defiant slice of electro-pulse house, taking its cues from the Pet Shop Boys' Relentless. Indeed, the mood is certainly early Nineties, many tracks having rolling drums and Orbital-esque instrumentation.
Mould also displays a refreshing down-to-earth wordsmithery, from tracks such as Guys Like You and Factory Builders Convention.
The final cut, Helium, is a particularly good house arrangement, beats folding back on itself in several directions, while a plaintive voice tries to stay afloat in the waves of the sound. Overall, interesting house reworkings, if not very challenging.
