AWARD-WINNING headline performers for the much-anticipated York Comedy Festival have been unveiled by organisers.
Perrier Award and British Comedy Award winner Tommy Tiernan will top the bill of the June festival which will see 40 events staged across the city.
The TV and film star will bring the week-long extravaganza, which is expected to attract more than 10,000 people, to a close at the York Barbican.
The festival, which takes place between June 23 and 29, will open with a gig at the Grand Opera House featuring Iranian stand-up Omid Djalili, sketch writer Lee Mack and respected comedian Boothby Graffoe.
Organiser Tom Sharp said York, with its growing comedy scene, will be the perfect venue for the week-long comedy extravaganza. He said: "The interest in the festival has been huge and we are looking forward to it becoming a big part of the national comedy calendar."
He said many acts would use the York festival to hone their skills before the world-famous Edinburgh Festival, which takes place a month later. The festival has already been given a £5,000 cash boost after it was recommended for a share of a £50,000 grant given to projects that promote personal and social benefit for York youngsters.
Organisers are also looking for volunteers to help at the event. Various positions are available, including promotions, event organisation and handling performers and the public. Anyone interested should phone Sue on 01904 673767.
