AN inability to secure adequate funding for 2003-2004 has resulted in the closure of the Detached Youth Work Project.
Founded in 1969 to work with young people in the city centre, the project developed a much wider field of operation, which saw detached youth workers interacting with young people in informal situations in many of the districts of York. Two key tasks performed by the workers were to support the self-development of young people and to help them to make informed choices about their lifestyles.
Following a review of the work of the project by an external consultant, planning had been ongoing with a view towards reorganising and updating the support which could be provided for young people who find it difficult to respond to the statutory agencies.
In this respect, a closer working relationship with other agencies in York that provide facilities and help for young people was being planned.
Throughout its existence the Detached Youth Work Project has been grateful for the financial support and physical help afforded by many organisations in York and further afield. In this respect the community fund, various departments of the City of York Council, the Neighbourhood Forums, York Youth Service, the church and various other local and national charitable organisations deserve special mention.
