FOREST of Galtres captains Bob Bailey and Anne Quarmby made a winning start to their year in office.

After their traditional drives-in, Bailey (8) and Quarmby (25) teamed with Eric Palmer (16) and Ronnie Davison (23) to notch seven birdies and finish with the leading 57.8 score in the Texas Scramble.

Kevin Banfield (14), Mike Ward (14), Dave Hudson (16) and Ian Strickson (19) holed eight birdies to record 58.7 ahead of 59 with an allowance of just four shots and nine birdies carded by Keith Bottomley (6), Trevor Boddison (9), Dave Edmondson (12) and Brian Griffin (13).

Countback kings

THE joys of 66 held sway in the York Union of Golf Clubs' Sharp Trophy played at Malton and Norton.

Fewer than three pairs tied on 66, but the overall winners on count-back proved to be Easingwold's Edward Conway and Peter Hodgson, whose efforts ensured the trophy was retained.

In second place were the Malton and Norton duo of Ian Mackenzie and Eddie Cooper, with the third spot going to Heworth's Paul Moisley and John McLaughlin.

Bright Grey

Yousef Grey won Allerthorpe Park's first medal of the season with a nett 60, two shots ahead of Peter Wright, while Sheena Barton and Jewan Roughley edged home on a countback with Marcina Birkett and Shirley Entwistle to win the Coronation Foursomes. Marian Pearson's 38 points won her the ladies Spring Cup.

Fulford's exit

Fulford's hopes of progress in the Mail on Sunday National Club Classic were dashed when they went out in an exciting finish to their third round match at Moor Allerton.

Dot Elliott and June Hutt lost the top two matches, but Liz Jones and Ann Robinson won their singles, only for Robinson to lose at the first extra sudden-death hole to Jan Mackie, the player she had previously beaten.
