THE Dean of York has paid a flying visit to the Yorkshire Air Museum.

The Very Reverend Raymond Furnell touched down at the Elvington museum to unveil a special plaque.

The plaque is in memory of the Dean cutting the first piece of turf for the museum's chapel eight years ago.

Museum chiefs say the chapel plays a vital role in the life of the museum, with regular squadron, remembrance and carol services taking place in the building.

Accompanying the Dean, who retires from his post at York Minster this month, was museum chaplain the Rev Leonard Rivett, who was an RAF navigator during the Second World War, and founding chairman Rachel Semlyen.

Rachel, who set up the museum with a group of volunteers in the early 1980s, has recently rejoined the museum's board of trustees.

Museum director, Ian Reed said: "Although Rachel has always played an active part in the museum, for family reasons she relinquished her trustee duties a few years ago. We are delighted she is back on the board, ready for the exciting times ahead."
