NOW that the military occupation of Iraq is nearing its achievement, it is worth remembering that the invasion was originally justified as being necessary so as to destroy weapons of mass destruction held illegally by Saddam Hussein.

The military action was taken without UN approval and in the face of opposition from millions of ordinary people - thousands here in York alone. Its legality was always suspect.

Now we have the evidence to bolster that doubt. In the past few days we have witnessed the use of cluster bombs, sustained attacks on targets in centres of population, the killing of innocent citizens and the assassination of Iraqi leaders. The wafer-thin morality of our Government and its supporters has been exposed by the actions of US/UK armed forces.

Those who consider that this war was a justified "liberation" of the Iraqi people should look closely at the appalling images of carnage and horror before suggesting that it was worth it.

The shameful behaviour of our MPs who supported this aggression cannot be explained away or excused. It will stand for all time as a statement of their values and beliefs.

They should do well to remember that when they next ask for our votes.
