READERS have expressed concerns about the proposed new bridge over the river next to York's Guildhall.

So an explanation of the proposal is appropriate.

The council has long had an ambition to provide this bridge as part of its transport strategy to improve city centre access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Most days we see the two bridges either side with footpaths full almost to overflowing.

The proposed bridge will provide a safe alternative right into the heart of the city and also link up with pedestrian access to the railway station and the major bus links in Rougier Street.

Cyclists will also benefit - particularly those approaching from the south west who will be able to park up on the west side and cross the bridge straight into the centre.

money for the bridge will come from two sources: from the Government through our local transport plan, with the possibility of further funding coming from the Regional Development Agency.

It is worth noting that this money would only be available if it were spent on transport and tourism-related projects respectively.
