THE future of York's pioneering NHS Walk-In Centre has been assured for at least the next three years.
The centre was one of 43 established across the country as a pilot project. Following its success, national funding has now been established to allow it to continue and develop.
Operated by Selby and York Primary Care Trust (PCT), the clinic opened in 2000.
During 2001/2002, 26,789 patients used the service, 15 per cent of whom were tourists and people visiting York for leisure activities. Currently about 100 patients use the centre every day.
Liz Vickerstaff, walk-in centre manager, said: "This service quickly found its place in local NHS health care. We work closely with our colleagues at York Hospital and in the primary sector, including local GPs and community nurses."
The centre is based at the front of Monkgate Health Centre, and opens daily, from 7am to 10pm.
