HEWORTH finished their National Conference League division two campaign in fine fashion as they hammered Rochdale Mayfield 44-10 at Elm Park Way.

The Villagers, despite being unable to go up, wanted to end on a high and did so by avenging a defeat at Mayfield earlier in the season which halted their eight-game unbeaten start to the campaign.

It all began on four minutes as Carl Potter kicked ahead and teenage winger Mark Watkinson, up from the 'A' team, won the race to touch down. It was a great start to his debut.

Then, from a scrum 30 metres out, Gavin Grant linked into the line and showed pace to cross, and soon after prop Will Neary powered over with four men on his back.

Good play kept the ball alive for second-row Wayne Foster to put hooker Liam Cochrane over and on the half-hour mark the excellent Brendan Carlyle put Sam Clarke in.

Potter converted all five tries for a 30-0 half-time lead.

Five minutes after the restart Nathan Witty went over from a Carlyle pass before Rochdale got on the scoresheet.

Stand-off Steve Gartland, who had been sin-binned for back-chatting just before the break, came back on and dummied to cross.

Man of the match Grant hit back with his second try after a good break and pass by impressive second-row Jason Kane, and then a period of scrappy play ended as substitute Paul Dooley finished a good passing movement in the corner, Potter adding his first conversion of the half to make it 44-4.

Mayfield had the last word through Gartland, far and away their best player, who also added the extras just before the hooter.

Nevertheless, it was a worthy victory for the Villagers and a good way to round off what was a fine season, despite the fact their promotion bid was ultimately in vain.
