"A GRAND old Yorkshire lady" is celebrating her 100th birthday.Roma Fawcett, of Connaught Court, St Oswald's Road, Fulford, York, was today being surrounded by friends and family to enjoy her centenary celebrations.

Roma has lived in Yorkshire all her life, a Leeds resident for her first 97 years, before moving to be closer to her family in York.

Her son, William, said: "She loves Yorkshire, she is a real grand old Yorkshire lady.

"She has lived through an amazing time from here, her favourite place."

Roma was being joined on her big day by her son and daughter, five grand children, and her great-granddaughter.

Friends make up a party of 20 who will join with residents at Connaught Court to celebrate the big day.

William said: "She has been looking forward to this day for months. Sadly, many of her friends have died now, but she is still going strong.

"She was determined to make it to today. She says if you make it to 99, you really have to get to 100."

Roma's determination is not all that has helped her to reach this milestone in good health.

She said: "I have always taken notice of what the doctor has told me and looked after my health.

"And I have always enjoyed every day as it comes to me. I think that is the best way."
