RYEDALE Reapers enjoyed a stunning competitive debut as they won the Pee Wee Spring Challenge Cup.

The Reapers, the York area's newest inline hockey club, entered a squad of eight players aged from ten to 15 for the five-a-side tournament, their first-ever event, which was promoted by Hull Kingston Panthers.

Three of the Reapers players had never played in a match before and the rest had played only two friendlies some time ago.

They were all nervous at the start but still won their opening game 4-2 against Ennerdale Raptors from Hull, the eventual runners-up. They immediately played again, against host Hull Panthers, drawing 2-2.

The Reapers took a while to settle in their last match, against Beverley Eagles, but after going ahead took control and won 5-0 to finish top of the table.

Goal scorers were Chris Armitage (four goals plus two assists), Jason Tooby (5+1) and Matthew Pemberton (2+3).

Ben Lyons was outstanding in goal, ably supported by Steve Hudson, Ben Flanagen and, in particular, Matthew Pemberton in defence. Josh Cole and Felix Dransfield also played well.

Lyons and Armitage gained man of the match awards in what was a superb team show.

For anyone aged from eight to 16 interested in playing, the team meets at Huntington School sports hall on Thursdays 6-8pm. From April 13, they will meet on Wednesdays 6-8pm. For further details contact Wendy Bowen on 07762 927035.
