MINORITY groups in North Yorkshire are to benefit from a newly-established grant scheme.

A programme to support minority groups has been established by Hambleton District Council.

Grants of up to £1,000 will be allocated to organisations which cater for specific diverse needs.

Phil Morton, the council's director of financial services, said: "This grant aid has been set up to assist in the promotion of diversity within the district.

"Diversity recognises that people are different from each other in many ways. We want to create an environment where such differences are respected."

Existing "not for profit" groups and those wanting to set up such a group can apply for help with new projects and start-up or updating costs.

Projects under £200 can receive 100 per cent grant aid up to a maximum of £200, while those over £200 can get 50 per cent grant up to a maximum of £1,000.

The scheme has been allocated £3,500 in its first year, beginning on April 1.

To apply, phone David Simpson on 01609 767024.
