FARMER George Copeland has moved into emergency bed and breakfast accommodation after being evicted from his North Yorkshire farm.
The 53-year-old left Walnut Tree Farm, at Thorpe Bassett, Rillington, near Malton, just hours before bailiffs arrived at lunchtime yesterday to secure the property.
George, who was born on the farm and lived there all his life, was evicted after he was twice late paying the rent in 2000.
Ryedale Housing Association said earlier this week it would provide him with a bungalow, but the accommodation would probably not be ready for a few days. George told the Evening Press on Wednesday that he would probably have to spend last night sleeping under a hedge.
But Ryedale District Council said today that it had a statutory duty to provide him with temporary emergency accommodation until the association's permanent accommodation was available.
He accepted an offer of bed and breakfast for last night, and would probably remain in this until he could move into one of the association's bungalows.
