THE secondary schools rugby league tournament at Heworth last week proved a success as more than 100 players turned out to compete at under-13 and under-15 level.
It was particularly successful for Burnholme, who took both titles.
The U15s nines competition was a closely contested affair with all five teams capable of beating each other.
In the first part of the draw, Barlby 'A' and Burnholme drew 4-4, and both beat a determined Huntington side.
The other group saw Archbishop Holgate and Millthorpe play out a 12-12 draw, the match being marred by an injury to Archbishop's Chris Field, while both sides beat Barlby 'B'.
Qualification from both group stages came down to points difference, with Millthorpe and Burnholme going through to the final, while Barlby 'A' and Archbishops played for third and fourth spot.
The final was a close run thing with Burnholme's organisation eventually overcoming a strong challenge by Millthorpe, 16-8.
The final standings were: 1 Burnholme; 2 Millthorpe; 3 Barlby 'A'; 4 Archbishops; 5 Barlby 'B'; 6 Huntington.
The U13s competition saw Barlby and Burnholme compete in a head-to-head and, as both could field full teams, a 13-a-side match took place under regular rugby league rules.
The more experienced Burnholme team managed to beat an enthusiastic Barlby side 40-6 in front of a good crowd.
