A RETIRED teacher who was headmistress at a York school for 25 years from the first day it opened has died aged 86.
Dorothy Langshaw, of Upper Poppleton, came to York from Darwen, Lancashire, in 1947, to take up an appointment as headmistress of St Lawrence's Infant School. She had previously worked at a school in Darwen and at a National Children's Home near Bolton.
She moved to Westfield Infant School, Acomb, when it opened in September 1951, and was headmistress there until her retirement in 1976.
She continued to be active and enjoyed photography, gardening and birdwatching.
She took her holidays with her sister in Anglesey every year since birth, and later bought a caravan and drove around Britain with her sister and her father.
She was very family orientated, and also cared deeply for her beloved dog, Penny.
The highlight of her latter years was attending the christening of her great-great-niece in Scotland.
Miss Langshaw died in York District Hospital on March 16.
She leaves a sister, Betty, two nieces, two nephews, two great-nephews, a great-niece and a great-great-niece.
