A BURGLAR who broke into a York home early today using a kebab skewer escaped when he was disturbed by the woman occupier.
The woman discovered the man in the house in Frances Street, York, when she went downstairs at about 3.15am today.
He escaped through the back door and locked it behind him so he could not be followed.
Police said he then ran down an alley and got into a maroon Vauxhall Cavalier and drove off. Bank cards were among the items taken.
The man was described as "tall" and was wearing a "trendy" red, waterproof jacket.
Police said he had used a kebab skewer to poke the keys out of the back door lock and had reached through the cat-flap to get them and unlock the door.
The male householder told police he had heard someone trying the front door at about midnight the night before.
Officers searched the area but did not find the man.
During their search they discovered about six properties with unlocked doors leading to their rear gardens.
